WORK
UNIVERSITY CORPORATION FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research is a nonprofit consortium of more than 100 North American member colleges and universities focused on research and training in the atmospheric and related Earth system sciences. UCAR manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research with sponsorship by the National Science Foundation. Through our community programs, UCAR supports and extends the capabilities of our academic consortium.
NCAR is devoted to service, research and education in the atmospheric and related sciences. NCAR's mission is to understand the behavior of the atmosphere and related Earth and geospace systems; to support, enhance, and extend the capabilities of the university community and the broader scientific community, nationally and internationally; to foster the transfer of knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth. The National Science Foundation is NCAR's sponsor, with significant additional support provided by other U.S. government agencies, other national governments and the private sector.
NCAR is home to seven laboratories, each taking a vital role in NCAR's mission. They cover research into climate, atmospheric chemistry, oceanography, severe weather, space weather, instrumentation, high performance computing, and the societal applications of all of these topics, among others.
UCAR'S OFFICE FOR DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION
I lead UCAR's Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, assigned to increase the diversity of UCAR's workforce, develop and maintain inclusive and welcoming workplace environments across the organization, and to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion into our scientific mission. My office provides strategic planning, institutional and employee support, training, information, and guidance across the organization in all things DE&I-related.
Our major initiatives include:
COMMUNITY SERVICE
I serve on a number of DE&I-related committees in the wider community, including AURA's Workforce and Diversity Committee, the AMS Board of Women & Minorities, and the AGU's Diversity & Inclusion Task Force.

My office provides strategic planning, institutional and employee support, training, information, and guidance across the organization in all things DE&I-related.
Our major initiatives include:
- A 4-part DEI training series for employees, called UCAR|NCAR Equity and Inclusion (UNEION), which introduces topics such as identity, privilege and power; issues around gender and race in the workplace, and bystander intervention training. The course combines pre-readings with group exercises and discussions led by "lead learners" who support the group in a peer-led capacity.
- An NSF INCLUDES-funded program partnering the Rising Voices initiative with GLOBE, Biosphere 2, SOARS, Haskell Indian Nations University and the University of Michigan, to co-create community research programs between indigenous communities and western scientists, for the benefit of all. Rising Voices is a groundbreaking program that brings social and physical scientists and engineers together with Native American community members to facilitate cross-cultural approaches for adaptation to extreme weather and climate events, climate variability, and climate change.
- A number of NSF GOLD programs designed to increase diversity and inclusion in the field of geosciences. These pilot programs test different approaches to building a more diverse and inclusive scientific community, from community-based research, to more inclusive field experiences, targeted support for minority junior faculty, to training for department members in privilege, microaggressions and bystander intervention.
